General Description
The Dominican Republic is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Caribbean, largely because it has the largest all-inclusive resort industry in the world. This form of vacation, based on set rates for airfare, hotel, food and drinks and providing carefree vacationing on idyllic beaches, within the protection of a tourist compound, now brings about two million visitors to the Dominican Republic a year. For the more adventurous, the Dominican Republic has just as much to offer. It has a great variety of terrain – rain forests, lowlands, coastal swamps, desert and the highest mountains in the Caribbean, rising to more than 10,000ft (3,000m). Luckily for visitors, there is little variation in temperature between summer and winter. In July, the warmest month, the average temperature is about 82F (28C) and it falls to 73F (23C) in January. The warmth of the water attracts many birds and marine animals and has made Bahia de Samaná, located in one of the most beautiful parts of the island, world-famous as a breeding ground. The most spectacular of these regular visitors are 3,000 humpback whales, who come to mate, give birth and play with their young not far offshore. The Dominican Republic is about the size of Scotland, but contains no less than seven international airports. It shares Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Caribbean, with its smaller neighbour, Haiti. Its capital, Santo Domingo, is the oldest city in the Americas, a cosmopolitan city with much of historic interest and lively nights.

East of Santo Domingo you will come to the coastal villages of Boca Chica and Juan Dolio, where you will find many beautiful resorts. Boca Chica boasts the largest reef-protected ocean lagoon in the Caribbean. A little further east is Juan Dolio, more tranquil and less hectic than Boca Chica. These beach towns are only 10 minutes away from San Pedro de Macoris, the nation’s third largest city, renowned for endowing the Major Leagues with many illustrious baseball stars. Bayahibe is a newly-developed area further to the east, not far from La Romana, and located approximately 90 minutes from Santo Domingo, that offers picturesque stretches of white-sand beach and lagoons protected by coral reefs. From here you can take a boat to Catalina Island and Saona Island, with their beautiful beaches. Catalina Island is one of the nation’s top dive spots.
